Carmen Geisha Panama From Kuma Coffee

If you appreciate fine coffee like I do, here's another superb sample that I was lucky enough to get my hands on. The flavors of this Carmen Geisha Panama were sweet and bright with a crisp, lively mouthfeel. Is this another "top shelf" coffee? Let's find out...

Details

Kuma Coffee
Seattle, WA
Carmen Geisha Panama
Roast: Medium - City +
Brewing method: Pour-over
Sample from: Bean Box

Aroma

From the bag the Geisha supplied prominent notes of coffee and sweet tangerine. Once ground the aroma was reminiscent of sweet, yet tart Meyer lemon. The pour-over created yet another shift in the aroma that reminded me of raspberry jam.

Mouthfeel

Extraction on this pour-over was perfect. The first sips of Carmen Geisha Panama were bright, clean and full of life, with a cleansing palate wash. As the coffee cooled, a light syrupiness developed, yet it still had the same mouthwatering effect across the palate and a lingering sweet aftertaste.

Flavor Notes

The first hot sips had amazing notes of sweet tree fruit with light notes of clean citrus, like a mix of plum, tangerine and lemon. As the coffee cooled a touch of warm spice and a hint toast developed.

Final Thoughts

Overall this Bean Box sample of Carmen Geisha Panama From Kuma Coffee was strictly "top shelf". With a fantastic mouthfeel and delightful flavors it's one of the finest coffees I've had the opportunity to sample.

Gurkha Showcases First-ever Lancero With The Classic Cigar: Havana Blend

Fort Lauderdale, FL - In keeping with consumer demand, Gurkha Cigars, known internationally as much for their super premium luxury cigars as well as for their innovation, has created their first Lancero-sized cigar in The Classic Cigar: Havana Blend.

"Gurkha Cigars has a reputation for out-of-the-box thinking," said National Sales Manager Juan Lopez. "We follow the market closely and listen to what consumers and our clientele are asking for. The Classic Cigar: Havana Blend Lancero fulfills that demand."

The Classic Cigar: Havana Blend created by Lopez and CEO Kaizad Hansotia is part of the company's East India Trading Company line. "After a few years of searching for the right wrapper and combination of tobaccos, we created this beautiful Nicaraguan masterpiece," said Hansotia.

It has a Mexican San Andres wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers. It's medium bodied and full flavored with earthy, nutty undertones. It retails for $8 a stick.

"You can really taste the San Andres wrapper," said Lopez. "The Classic Cigar: Havana Blend is a cigar worthy of its name. And it has already received a rating of 93! We are very proud at how well this cigar has been received and also at how well our entire East India Trading Company line has grown."

In creating the East India line Hansotia added "The goal at Gurkha is to always to make a cigar for every palate without sacrificing quality. We want every consumer satisfied with what he or she finds when smoking a Gurkha cigar."

Today Gurkha produces eight million cigars per year. They are sold in more than 50 countries worldwide. Each Gurkha cigar provides a luxurious experience different from the last. Housed in a beautifully appointed facility in South Florida, Gurkha has core brands, limited edition brands, super premium luxury brands and an entire line of innovative and affordable brands through its East India Trading Company line.

Steeped in legend and rich in history, Gurkha Cigars were named after Nepalese warriors whose bravery impressed the British soldiers. The company was purchased by Kaizad Hansotia in 1989 for all of $149 with the intention of giving the cigars as unique gifts to customers of his family's watch business. The cigars were such a big hit that Hansotia realized he was on to something. He began to expand the line into what it has become today, one of the most famous brands of cigars in the world.

New World Virrey From A.J. Fernandez Cigars

When looking at this New World Virrey (a 6 x 58 Gordo), from A.J. Fernandez Cigars, "outstanding" is the first word that come to mind.

The New World Gordo is has two nice looking bands, it's box pressed, plus the dark, Nicaraguan Oscuro colored wrapper is rolled on with seamless care and it's practically vein free.

When checking the cold aromas, there sweet floral notes to the nose from the foot and the free draw has notes of toasted fermented tobacco.

Once burning the filler blend of ligeros from Esteli, Condega and Ometepe produce a nice volume of medium bodied smoke with flavor notes of toast, brown sugar and nuts. As the burn enters the cigar's second third there are added notes of caramel, oak and molasses while the body moves toward  the full range.

Near the cigar's mid point the burn took off a bit and the cigar needed a quick correction. By the final third the body moved into the full range as the flavors shifted again. The tasty brown sugar was back with notes of earth and charcoal which created a long tasty finish.

Overall this was a great cigar. The burn did need correction a total of three times before tossing the the nub, but the great full bodied flavor mix and a long 105 minute smoking time more than made up for that small hassle. The New World Virrey From A.J. Fernandez Cigars is another winner in my book.

Another thing that's great about this cigar is the price point. You can pick these up from Famous Smoke Shop in boxes of 21 for less than six bucks a stick. That's a real deal on a cigar with this much flavor.

By the way, if you look closely at the main band, it says: "satisfaction guaranteed", and I was!

Inferno 3rd Degree Robusto from Oliva Cigars

Once in a while I misjudge a cigar and this Inferno 3rd Degree from Oliva Cigars really caught me off guard. With the first whiffs from the cold foot I could tell this was a full bodied cigar, but the initial aroma mix had some bold spice. Spice in the cold aroma mix, Inferno for the name? I thought, "oh oh, pepper bomb".

That assumption was totally wrong. Once burning I discovered it wasn't a pepper bomb at all. What I did experience from the Famous Smoke Shop exclusive Inferno 3rd Degree cigar was sixty-five minutes of full bodied, full flavored bliss.

The Inferno 3rd Degree contains all triple-fermented Nicaraguan tobaccos covered in a stout Maduro colored Habano Nicaraguan wrapper that's nearly vien free. From the cold foot the rich aroma contains notes of raisins, cocoa and spice, while the firm cold draw has flavors of bold spiced fruit.

Once burning the first puffs of meaty, chewy, full bodied smoke had delicious flavors of coffee, cocoa and fruit. A perfect mix for my palate. In the second third, added notes of earth, toast and leather joined the mix.

As the razor sharp burn moved into the final third the flavors changed again with notes of charcoal, coffee and chocolate. This cigar was a real chocolate bomb and it provided a long, great tasting, burnt mocha finish.

Overall I thought this Inferno 3rd Degree was a real power-house cigar that provided a deep, rich, full bodied flavor mix with smoke so thick you can nearly chew it. With sub $4.00 price point each in boxes of 20 this cigar is a real winner! You can pick up these exclusive Inferno 3rd Degree smokes here.

Costa Rica Geisha From Zoka Coffee

Bright and crisp, yet soft and supple, this Costa Rica Geisha brewed into one of the finest cups I've had the pleasure to sip.

Zoka Coffee Company
Seattle, WA
Costa Rica Geisha
Origin: Costa Rica
Region: Tarrazu
Roast: Medium - City +
Brewing method: Pour-over
Sample from: Bean Box

After first cracking the bag open, I knew this Costa Rica Geisha was going to brew into a great cup. The aroma of ripe tree fruit hit me instantly and after grinding, the aromas really bloomed. When hot water saturated the ground coffee in the pour-over cone, the aromas changed slightly with added notes of light spice and toast.

With the pour-over complete an enticing aroma of sweet toffee radiated from the hot cup to greet my nose. Extraction on this pour-over was spot-on, the first sips were light, bright and crisp, but at the same time smooth, mouthwatering and perfectly balanced. After the coffee cools a bit the brightness builds a little, but it's still delightful, well balanced and delicious.

From the first to the last sips the flavors of this Geisha were fantastic. The first sips had nuances of sweet toffee, with just a bit of mixed tree fruit (sweet with just a hint of tart), and toasted nuts, with a pleasant, light earthy aftertaste on the palate. As the coffee cooled the flavor morphed tasting more like caramel mixed with nougat as the primary flavor and just a hint of fruitiness.

La Aurora Cigars Puro Vintage 2006 Edicion III Aniversario Salomon

Gobs of smoke, over-the-top construction, a nice burn time and a sweet fermented tobacco flavor mix, what more can you ask for in a cigar? Well that's just what I found smoking this La Aurora Cigars Puro Vintage 2006 Edicion III Aniversario Salomon.

This La Aurora Puro Vintage 2006 Edicion III Aniversario Salomon is a pretty special cigar. All the tobacco leaves in the blend were harvested in 2006 and production was limited to 1500 numbered 1906 replica boxes.

Looking at the overall construction, it's very nice. The Colorado Maduro colored wrapper is rolled on seamlessly and there are only the finest of veins present. The cigar is packed well full length and the combination of an Ecuadorian wrapper, Brazilian binder over Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Brazilian fillers produce a pleasant aroma of spicy fermented tobacco from the cold foot.

After clipping the end, the free cold draw again has notes of well fermented spicy tobacco, but there are added hints of sweet tree fruit.

Once the cigar was burning the first medium body mouthfuls of smoke, and I mean mouthfuls, had notes of toast and lightly spicy fermented tobacco, plus the smoke left behind a nice spicy aftertaste. As the razor sharp burn progressed, the strength moved into the full range with added nuances of brown sugar, tree fruit, oak, earth, wheat straw and more toast.

The cigar finished it's sixty-five minute burn with a flavor mix of oak, caramelized brown sugar, earth and a hint of charcoal. It was a pretty tasty finish.

Overall this La Aurora Puro Vintage 2006 Edicion III Aniversario Salomon was a great smoking experience.

Sabor de Esteli Robusto by Guayacan Cigars

Superb construction and a complex flavor mix contributed to a great overall smoking experience from this Sabor de Esteli Robusto by Guayacan Cigars.

Construction of the Sabor de Esteli is nothing short of top notch. A binder and fillers from Nicaragua are wrapped in a Colorado colored San Andreas wrapper that's nearly vein free.

From the cold foot there are light notes of fruit to the nose while the free cold draw has notes of sweet fruit.

Once burning the first medium bodied puffs were flavorful with a mix of toast, mild tree fruit and light brown sugar. As the burn progressed up the body more flavors jumped in. There were hints of white pepper, nuts, cocoa, oak and espresso.

In the final third the body moves into the full range and the cigar finishes it's fifty minute burn with nice notes of fermented tobacco, toast, caramel and a sweet lingering aftertaste on the palate.

Overall this Sabor de Esteli Robusto was a real treat to smoke. If you have the chance to pick on up, don't pass it up.

Uganda Bugisu From Buna Mobile Roasting Company

Oily, aromatic and evenly roasted, this looks like a great sample. Just looking at this Uganda Bugisu whole bean coffee from Buna Mobile Roasting Company as I take the picture it makes my mouth water with anticipation.

Buna Mobile Roasting Company
Uganda Bugisu
Roast: Vienna Light French
Brewing method: Pour-over

Once the bag is opened the first thing you notice, besides the dark, rich and oily appearance of the beans, are the bold aromatic aromas of toast, cocoa and coffee. Along the way I found grinding these whole beans enhances the nice aroma they produce.

As hot water is introduced during the pour-over process the wet coffee radiates pleasant cocoa and floral notes to the nose.

With the pour-over complete, the aroma changes dramatically as there are notes of cloves and sweet pecans coming from the cupped brew.

The first sips are bright and there are deep rich notes of toasted walnuts. The coffee leaves behind slightly pungent aftertaste and the light mouthfeel left my mouthwatering for another sip. As the coffee cools the flavor takes on more robust, earthy tones and the coffee produces a heavier syrup-like mouthfeel.

Overall I found this coffee complex, the flavors run deep in these beans, well roasted and delicious. I'm now heading to brew another cup!

Davidoff Nicaragua Tubo Robusto

Today we're taking a look at the Davidoff Cigars Nicaragua Tubo Robusto. Although I reviewed this cigar last year, that cigar came from a non-tubo promo pack included with humidor I won from Davidoff Cigars in 2014.

Construction wise the two cigars are identical, but of course they should be. The Colorado Claro colored Nicaraguan Rosado wrapper is flawless with smooth, nearly invisible seams and only the finest of veins. Under the wrapper of this well packed cigar there's a Jalapa binder covering long fillers from Esteli, Condega, and Ometepe.

From the cold foot there are notes of toasty fermented tobacco to the nose and the cold draw produces sweet notes of tree fruit with just an added hint of spice.

Once burning the cigar produced nice mouthfuls of mild bodied smoke with notes of toasted oak and a bit of spicy cedar. As the razor sharp burn moved up the body, notes of nuts, brown sugar and caramel joined the mix. Just past the halfway point the strength moved into the medium range and there were some light hints of anise. The cigar finished its sixty-five minute burn with more notes of spicy cedar.

Overall I really enjoyed this cigar, it didn't have a complex flavor mix, but it was smooth and delecious full length. You can find these Davidoff Nicaragua Tubo Robusto cigars at FamousSmokeShop.com go ahead, give them a try!

New World Connecticut Toro by A. J. Fernandez Cigars

You probably already know that I'm a huge fan of pretty much every cigar A. J. Fernandez has a hand in. This recently released New World Connecticut falls right in line.

This tasty morsel starts with a claro colored shade grown Connecticut wrapper over a San Andres binder with fillers from Nicaragua and Brazil.

Looking at the cigar overall, the wrapper is rolled on in seamless fashion and you have look closely to find anything but very fine, spider web type veins.

From the cold foot there are notes to the nose of spicy Spanish cedar, toast and a hint of sweet fruit. Testing the free cold draw there were again notes of spice and fruit.

After toasting and lighting the foot the New World Connecticut produced nice mouthfuls of mild bodied smoke with notes of nuts, toast and a hint of spice.

Around the mid point the strength builds just a bit moving into the mild/medium range. At this point the flavor mix shifts a little as there are notes of white pepper, toasted fermented tobacco, and hint of sweet cream.

In the final third the flavor mix shifts again with notes of caramelized brown sugar, sweet cream oak and a bit of earthiness.

The cigar finished it's burn with a nice fifty-five minute burn in the medium body range. Overall this New World Connecticut cigar was a tasty pleasure to smoke and I'll definitely add them to my "to smoke" list.

I would like to thank Creativas Group for providing this sample.

A.J. FERNANDEZ TO INTRODUCE THE “ENCLAVE” AT THE 2015 IPCPR IN NEW ORLEANS

(Miami, Florida) July 13, 2015— A.J. Fernandez Cigars, known for producing consistently highly rated and sought after cigars, is proud to unveil “Enclave” at the 2015 IPCPR in New Orleans. Following in the footsteps of the very popular New World cigar, the Enclave blend was a special collaboration between A.J. and his father Ismael Fernandez.

The spirit of the Enclave cigar lies within the special brotherhood, created by those who enjoy a great cigar. In the dictionary, Enclave is defined as: a portion of territory within or surrounded by a larger territory whose inhabitants are culturally or ethnically distinct. Cigar smokers from every ethnic background, race, or creed, bond together daily to escape the everyday, while sharing a handcrafted premium cigar. A.J. Fernandez Cigars celebrates this brotherhood with the Enclave.

A.J. Fernandez said: “There is no doubt that there is a special bond shared among those passionate about cigars. I experience it daily as I have the luxury of sharing my labor of love with my father, Ismael. We invite you to join our “Enclave” with this special cigar that we have patiently crafted to perfection.”

The Enclave blend is an elegantly displayed cigar, adorned with a cigar ring which depicts images of Native Indians, a representation of the original tobacco enclave. As with every A.J. Fernandez cigar brand, Enclave is a carefully hand-crafted cigar, which was blended under strict supervision of A.J. Fernandez in their Estelí, Nicaragua based factory.

The Enclave is a medium to full bodied cigar. The rich Habano Rosado wrapper from Ecuador compliments a decadent Cameroon Binder. AJF Select Nicaraguan and AJF Nicaraguan Piloto Cubano Fillers greet the cigar aficionado, with notes of pepper, spice, cedar, and cinnamon. At an MSRP of six dollars, A.J. Fernandez is looking for Enclave to be a first class cigar that can be a daily source of enjoyment.

The Enclave come in a beautifully adorned 20 count box and come in four sizes.

Robusto                5 x 52
Toro                      6 x 52
Churchill               7 x 52
Figurado          6 1/2 x 52

Back, I'm Back In The Saddle Again

After a couple month hiatus, I am finally back and working again. I'm a bit behind, but I will get to everything that's stacked up, just not at the fast and furious pace set before.

Things have slipped with Mom. Her dementia has tightened its grip and helping her on a day-to-day basis is much more time consuming than any time in the past two years. I finally have a better grip on the time constraints and have even smoked a couple cigars that are ready to write up.

If you would like the full story here's a link to my Alzheimer's blog that spells it all out in detail.

I'm happy to be back and I hope everyone has a great day!

Press Release: Davidoff Introduces A New Line Of Winston Churchill Short Cigars

Davidoff introduces a new line of complex Winston Churchill short cigars to
delight aficionados who are short on time

Basel, June 2015.

Davidoff announces the addition of two short cigars in a Belicoso and Petit Panetela format to the recently introduced line of Davidoff Winston Churchill cigars bearing the name of the world’s most iconic cigar aficionado – Sir Winston Churchill. A man whose many facets and complexity added up to a personality which set him apart. A man who was the very embodiment of “Time Beautifully Filled”.

“These two new short formats have been designed to delight aficionados with an exceptionally complex cigar when time is a luxury. Like other cigars in the Davidoff Winston Churchill range, they
are inspired by two of Winston Churchill’s complex character facets: a man of great speeches and write ups – The ‘Raconteur’, and a man who explored the world – The ‘Traveller’,” says Charles Awad, Senior Vice President Global Marketing and Innovation at Oettinger Davidoff AG.

THE CIGARS

A BELICOSO
Sir Winston Churchill was a man who throughout his life was a traveller, a wayfarer, exploring the
world through his work as a war correspondent, widening his horizons and his mind. This took him to
Cuba and to the beginning of his love affair with cigars. Indeed seeds from the island are in the fabric
of the Belicoso. Later, his roaming spirit would take him to Marrakesh, the inspiration for many of his paintings and a location as rich and full-flavoured as this Belicoso format cigar, which would certainly satisfy Sir Winston’s taste for the exotic.

A PETIT PANETELA
Sir Winston was a raconteur, a lover of “les bon mots”. A teller of tales and a weaver of words, his
speeches were as captivating in private as they were in public. The anecdotes would intermingle like
the complex flavours of the Davidoff Winston Churchill Petit Panetela which starts a little earthy with hints of spice and liquorice but then, against a backdrop of floral and herb notes, it begins to gradually mellow out. Like the closing of an evening, enjoyed in the conversational company of the Great Man himself.

THE BLEND

The aim was to craft this new range of short cigars as uniquely diverse as the man who inspired them.
The Davidoff Master Blenders have embraced and accomplished an exciting challenge: blending
cigars of a complex character with a rich mixture of fine qualities drawing on and harmonizing the
tobaccos of Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. The inspiration for these chosen
short formats was the Great Man’s persona, his complex character traits, and his actions and
experiences which shaped our history.

The Davidoff Winston Churchill short cigars boast a beautiful shiny and oily Ecuadorian wrapper. The blends of the Belicoso and the Petit Panetela are inspired by the multifaceted character of Sir Winston Churchill thus delivering a palate stimulation in line with the range of Davidoff Winston Churchill cigars; truly Cigars of Character. While enjoying these cigars, the palate is delighted with pepper notes, dark coffee, wood and spices accompanied with a creamy aftertaste and rich aroma. With an enjoyment time of 25 minutes these cigars are ideally suited for aficionados short on time. These cigars come in an elegant white lacquered tin that can fit in every pocket and showcases the embossed iconic silhouette of Sir Winston Churchill.

It retails for $7.99 - $9.99 a cigar. “We’re proud to release a fantastic medium to full-bodied blend in the Heritage Cigar. It comes in two sizes;: 5 x 58 and 6 x 58. It comes in a striking new wooden 200-count box styled like only the artisans at Gurkha know how to do. The Cask Blend’s unique flavor notes are complemented by the natural richness of the proprietary wrapper, binder and fillers. It’s a rich and complex cigar like the Gurkha brand itself. It boasts notes of sweet spice and rich cedar. It retails for $7.99 to $8.99 a cigar.

According to Hansotia, “When developing new brands, I always remind myself of the military themes that coincide with the Gurkha soldiers, but more importantly, I think of the consumer and what drives their palate. I follow the market and listen to what consumers are asking for. Even when I travel, I stop into cigar shops around the world and ask people for their input in a cigar profile.

“My goal is to make a cigar for every palate without sacrificing quality. That is paramount. We want every consumer satisfied with what he or she finds when smoking a Gurkha cigar. Having the same design team for the past two decades helps us maintain consistency and bring our cigars to the next level. But there is always a metamorphosis in the cigar aficionados offering room to grow.”

Today Gurkha produces eight million cigars per year. They are sold in more than 200 50 countries worldwide. Each Gurkha cigar provides a luxurious experience different from the last. Housed in a beautifully appointed facility in South Florida, Gurkha has core brands, limited edition brands and an entire line of innovative and affordable brands through its East India Trading Company line.

Steeped in legend and rich in history, Gurkha Cigars were named after Nepalese warriors whose bravery impressed the British soldiers. The company was purchased by Kaizad Hansotia in 1989 for all of $149 with the intention of giving the cigars as unique gifts to customers of his family’s watch business. The cigars were such a big hit that Hansotia realized he was on to something. He began to expand the line into what it has become today, one of the most famous brands of luxury cigars in the world.
