VILLIGER CIGARS NORTH AMERICA UNVEILS NEW HEADQUARTERS WITH A GRAND CELEBRATION




(Miami, Florida) April 29, 2016— Villiger North America celebrated their re-launch and the opening of their new headquarters in Miami with a by-invitation-only red carpet event, at its new location at 8107 NW 29 ST. Doral, FL. 33122. The Villiger North America re-launch was hosted by Mr. Heinrich Villiger himself and new Villiger NA President Rene Castaneda.

The event featured notables to include: Guillermo Leon of La Aurora, Alejandro Martinez Cuenca of Joya De Nicaragua, Carlos Torano Sr. of the famed Torano cigar family, Felix Mesa of Galan Cigars, Scott Chester of ACID Cigars, Albert Montserrat of Cigar Rings, Kris Kachaturian, formerly of A.J. Fernandez Cigars, and Ferdinand Kurt of the Swiss Consulate.

During his speech, Mr. Villiger communicated of his continued commitment to the North American market. After thanking colleagues, friends and the new Villiger North American team, Mr. Villiger was presented a certificate by Doral City Officials before the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Guests were greeted with three cigars (Villiger 1888, and two private stock unbranded cigars by La Aurora and Joya de Nicaragua). The cocktail reception featured cocktails courtesy of Zafra Rum, Jack Daniel’s, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel, Gentleman Jack, Jack Honey, Korbel Champagne, and Findlandia Vodka.

This Villiger North America re-launch event comes only months after the announcement of Rene Castaneda as their new President.

Rene Castaneda stated: ” The launch event was a great success, and only a sneak preview of what’s to come. I look forward to working alongside Mr. Villiger, CEO Robert Suter, and Managing Director Michael Blumendeller to expose the Villiger brand to the consumer. Jason Holly Of Viva Republica To Unveil "Ivy"



April 27, 2016 - Jason Holly will unveil the release of “Ivy” at an exclusive event at Casa de Montecristo in Countryside, IL on Thursday, April 28th. “Ivy” is a project that although under parent company Viva Republica will boast a completely different personality - initially Ivy will only be sold in 100 specially selected retail shops.

The first batch of “Ivy” is an Ecuadorian Habano Corojo wrapped expression of a complex but balanced set of earthy and fruity flavors partly derived from its double binder of tobaccos from Cameroon and the Dominican Republic. Inside the alluring wrapped is a blend of high primed filler leaves from the Dominican Republic’s Cibao Valley and Nicaragua’s Estelí and Condega regions.

The Ivy concept was born out of sort of transfixing the style and mannerisms of the Ivy League. Jason Holly said, “I used to smoke cigars in Harvard Yard when I was in school. In a store on the square I saw an old picture of JFK smoking a cigar in the Yard, the history and tradition is overwhelming and I wanted to create a brand that had that feel of nostalgia.”

While the cigar is full production it is only being offered to an initial 100 accounts. “There’s a very specific growth plan that we have conceived to properly introduce Ivy to the marketplace,” said Jason Holly, owner of Viva Republica, parent company of Ivy.

The first offerings include a trio of sizes: Lamont (Corona - 5.25 x 43) $12 MSRP, Dudley (Robusto - 5” x 50) $13.25 MSRP and Porcellian (Double Corona - 7.5” x 50) $14.50 MSRP. “We have some other sizes already produced and aging,” Holly said, “They will start shipping by the end of July.” All tobaccos used in the Ivy Habano blend have been aged a minimum of five years. The first batch uses filler tobacco from 2007 and 2009 and wrapper leaf grown in 2008.

This release and endeavor undoubtedly askews the previous Viva Republica releases but doesn’t necessarily signal a change for the company. “Ivy is a just another side of what we do and was designed to help connect with cognoscente consumers whose buying patterns tend to diverge from the core Viva offerings which are more value positioned.”

It’s not the same style cigar as you may expect from Viva Republica, focused on well-aged and nuanced tobacco rather than the typical power-forward blends Viva Republica has produced such as Advanced and Guerrilla Warfare.

Ivy ships in ten count boxes designed by noted illustrator Glenn Wolk, who has done product design for the likes of The Beatles, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.

Holly said there will be future blends and releases in the Ivy line but would not reveal how or when new accounts would be added.

As typical with other Viva República products, Ivy is produced at La Aurora, S.A. in partnership with Don Guillermo León and exclusively distributed in the United States by Miami Cigar & Co.

According to Willy Herrera, master blender for Drew Estate, this TAA Exclusive is "spicy, meaty and rich:" What a perfect description of a great cigar. Read on to see what I found.

This beauty starts off with an oily, and I do mean oily, Colorado Maduro colored wrapper. It's probably the oiliest cigar I've smoked and that's pretty sweet. Besides the oil sheen, the wrapper is seamless and contains only the finest of veins.

From the cold foot there are rich, sweet aromas of fruity fermented tobacco that will get your senses rocking. After clipping the tight triple cap the cold draw is free, with notes of sweet and spicy fruit while the wrapper leaves behind a spicy after taste on the lips.

After toasting and lighting the foot, the first puffs are medium bodied and full flavored with sweet notes of brown sugar, spice and stone fruit.

As the razor sharp burn progresses toward the mid point it leaves behind a firm white ash while other flavor nuances of earth and leather join the mix while the spice builds a bit more.

In the second half the body moves into the medium/full range as spicy caramel and a hint of oak become the predominant flavors. Don't worry though, there's still a nice sweetness underneath. There's also a deep oily ring on the wrapper just ahead of the burn.

Nearing the final third the strength build and this cigar finishes as full bodied. Along with the nice burn and strength changes in the final third there's another flavor shift. The cigar has a long finish with flavors of sweet caramel, oak and nuts.

Overall I thought this TAA Exclusive was an amazing cigar. The progressive strength characteristics along with the great burn and complex flavors were impressive. If you get a chance to smoke this cigar, don't pass it up!

Changes Ahead

In an effort to best represent what's happening on this blog our domain name will soon be changing to CigarAndCoffee.com.

When this blog started several years ago the main focus was on reviewing budget cigars. While I'm still a Cheap Ash and finding great budget cigars is still a passion, the number of premium cigars well out weigh the number of budget cigars being reviewed. In addition, the name CheapAshCigar.com has nothing to do with the premium coffee's that are being reviewed. 

The change will take place some time this week, probably Wednesday night since Tuesday is Legends of Fire night and Thursday is Prohibition GastroPub night (I have a post coming soon about the pub and Cigar Train). Because smoking cigars with friends is way more important than changing domain names around. 

CheapAshCigar.com will be redirected and still point to this blog, but CigarAndCoffee.com will be the primary name that appears. 

Over the next few weeks there are some great cigars slated to be reviewed, plus there will be added focus on Spokane area cigar events. Plus, I'll be posting more on Instagram, Twitter and Swarm, especially when I'm out around Spokane. Feel free to come join the fun on Tuesdays and Thursday plus we can talk cigars and coffee.

Room 101 Cigar Party With Matt Booth At Legends Of Fire

On Wednesday April 20th, Legends of Fire, the cigar and fine spirits lounge at Northern Quest Resort & Casino held a Room 101 Brand Cigar party.

I've missed a couple of these events in recent months and it appears Legends of Fire is doing things a bit different now. Ticket sales are now limited to a maximum of 50 per event and locker holders are allowed into the event 15 minutes early. Both these changes are positive and enhance the experience of these smaller events. Plus now I want to become a locker holder so I get early access.

Each attendee was greeted upon entering with a bundle of 3 Room 101 cigars (2 from the HN line and 1 Big Payback), plus a sample cocktail created with Hennessy Cognac. The cigars and the cocktails we quite tasty.

I did get to spend a bit of time with Matt Booth talking cigars, life and a wide assortment of other topics. While I didn't learn any insider secrets, I did find out that Matt is working on another limited edition that will be ready by the time IPCPR 2016 rolls around.

Overall it was a great night and I had a great time. If you're in Spokane and haven't made it to one of these events your  missing out on a good time!

VUDU DARK NO. 3

I don't know how they do it, but Famous Smoke Shop came up with another amazing exclusive. This one blended by Jesus Fuego, the Vudu Dark No. 3. With a great price point and a deluge of tasty flavors it's a near perfect match for my palate and wallet.

Once the Vudu is free from the cellophane you'll instantly notice two things. the oily, seamless, dark Maduro colored wrapper and then just how full this stick is stuffed full of fillers. It's backed so firmly you'll think the draw may be tight, but surprisingly it's not. 

From the cold foot there are floral nuances of fermented tobacco to the nose and once the tightly wrapped triple cap is clipped the free cold draw has notes of toasty, sweet red wine. After toasting and lighting the foot, the first puffs are medium bodied with full sweet flavors of cocoa and fruit with a dash of black pepper. The pepper soon fades while the sweet fruit and cocoa flavors continue to builds The dark wrapper also leaves behind a sweet aftertaste on the lips. In the final third the body moves into the medium/full range plus there are hints of oak, leather and charcoal with lots of brown sugar and cocoa for the finish. 

Overall this was a great cigar. The Vudu had top-notch construction, fantastic flavors, a satisfying fifty-five minute burn time and price you can't go wrong with. You can get these Vudu Dark No. 3 from Famous Smoke Shop in 5 & 10 packs or in this neat looking 19 count jar.

The event was highlighted by the global launch of the Limited Chefs Edition, a special cigar line, created exclusively by six international chefs.

Between them the six chefs boast nine Michelin stars and the two Swiss chefs, Knogl and Wüst have 19 and 15 GaultMillau points respectively Wüst also bears the honour of being GaultMillau CigarMan of the Year 2016.

Press Release: Oettinger Davidoff AG appoints General Manager for Germany


Oettinger Davidoff AG has appointed Olaf Ruf as the future general manager of the subsidiary it intends to create for Germany, Davidoff of Geneva Germany. The experienced manager comes from the tobacco industry and brings many years of experience in the German market as well as a strong sales and marketing background. He will now apply this to the gradual setting-up and development of the Oettinger Davidoff business in Germany.   

Basel/Switzerland, 18th April 2016. Oettinger Davidoff AG, the world-leading producer of premium cigars headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, has appointed Olaf Ruf as the future General Manager and Vice President of Davidoff of Geneva Germany. The 43year-old German has extensive experience and a close-knit network in the German and international tobacco business that he will put to good use in the development of the German sales company to be established. In the period leading up to the company’s foundation, Olaf Ruf will initially act as an external consultant during the course of the year, and head the planning and preparation for taking over the operative business at the end of the year. As is generally known, in line with the rigorous pursuit of its future strategic orientation, Oettinger Davidoff AG has terminated the existing collaboration with its German sales partner in order to establish its own Hamburg-based subsidiary and exploit the important German market with effect from 1 January 2017.   

Its future head looks back on an impressive career in the tobacco and luxury food industry. After schooling and studies in Germany, Great Britain and the USA, Olaf Ruf worked in various internationally active companies in the industry and was a member of the management of Imperial Tobacco and Reemtsma, among others. Most recently, the sales and marketing expert was CEO of SNOKE. “I am now returning to the ‘real’ smoking pleasure and the fascinating world of premium cigars”, says Ruf, talking about his new job. “I am looking forward to putting the experience and network from my previous activities to work in setting up and establishing Davidoff of Geneva Germany.” Ruf is married, the father of two children and enjoys playing tennis and the piano in his spare time.

E. P. Carrillo Seleccion Oscuro Robusto

E. P. Carrllio Cigars recently hosted a contest to promote their new Seleccion Oscuro line and guess what? I won a 5-pack of these outstanding new cigars.

Hand-made in the Dominican Republic this Seleccion Oscuro features a Mexico San Andres wrapper over a binder from Ecuador and long fillers from Nicaragua. 

So that's how it's made it's made, but how does it smoke?

From the cold foot I found a pleasant aroma of sweet, fermented tobacco and after clipping the triple cap, the draw is free with the same sweet fermented tobacco flavors. Along with this, the hearty, toothy Oscuro wrapper left behind a nice sweet cocoa aftertaste on my lips. 

After toasting the foot, the first medium bodied mouthfuls of smoke had a flavor mix of sweet fruit, cocoa and a hint of toast. 

As the sharp burn line moved toward the cigar's mid point other flavors of nuts, oak and mild black pepper moved in to dominate the tasty flavor mix. 

In the final third the flavors really shifted and the cigar moved into the medium/full body range. The sweet cocoa was back along with a hint of coffee, cream and charcoal providing my favorite flavor mix of burnt mocha. Delicious!

You probably know that I'm a quick smoker, but this E. P. Carrillo Seleccion Oscuro Robusto gave me a more than respectable sixty minutes of smoking pleasure. 

Overall I though this was an amazing cigar and I've already smoked most of my 5-pack. If you get a chance to smoke this cigar, don't pass it up.

ARTURO FUENTE CHATEAU FUENTE MADURO ROTHSCHILD

Believe it or not but this is not only the first A. Fuente cigar I've reviewed it's the first I've ever smoked. Why? I don't really know, but I did discover that at $4.95 a pop (if you buy them by the box from Famous Smoke Shop) I've been missing out on a really tasty cigar.

Under the cedar sleeve of this Arturo Fuente Rothschild you'll find it wrapped in a hearty and stout looking dark maduro colored wrapper. From the cold foot there's a faint aroma of cocoa to the nose and once the triple cap is cut you'll find a smooth even draw with notes of spicy cocoa.

Once the cigar was burning the first mouthfuls of medium bodied smoke were smooth with notes of cocoa, spice and a hint of fruit. As the slightly uneven burn progressed up the body, nuances of earth, oak and leather dominated the mix. By the final third the burn had straightened out and the cigar finished still in the medium body range with nice flavor mix of sweet, creamy cocoa, a bit of charcoal.

Overall this Arturo Fuente Maduro Rothschild really surprised me with its great tasting flavor mix and nice fifty minute burn time. I highly recommend this cigar and you can pick them up from FamousSmokeShop.com in five packs or boxes of 20.

Captive Coffee is new to the roasting scene here in Spokane and I've been lucky enough to procure several samples to review over the next couple of weeks.

This first sample of India Monsooned Malabar is a Full City + roast and knew it was going to be good just breaking the bag's seal. From the bag, as well as the ground beans, there are vivid notes of sweet fruit and toasted pecans that radiate to greet my nose.

Several feet away from the brewed cup there's a pleasant aroma of toasted pecans with a hint of cocoa. The first sips give a splash of bright fruit and a hint of earthy spice that provides a cleansing, mouthwatering palate wash that lasts until the next sip. As the coffee cools the fruity acidity begins to fade and cocoa takes over as the predominate flavor while a syrupy mouth-feel builds, yet there is still a hint of earthy spice present.

Overall this sample of India Monsooned Malabar from Captive Coffee brewed into a nice, complex cup. The bright fruit up front was a enough to wake the palate, then as the coffee cooled it became smooth and creamy. There was no bitterness found and the coffee produced a clean cup.

Press Release: La Aurora Cigar Institute Celebrates With Great Success Its First Course


Santiago de los Caballeros 6 March.- This past January, La Aurora Factory faithful to its strategic planning focused on the pillars of training and development in the culture of the Dominican cigar –announced one of its launches that is undoubtedly the most important of 2016: La Aurora Cigar World. As part of the company’s strategic plan, this concept emerged from La Aurora Cigar Institute, the world’s first institution dedicated to training and teaching everything about the cigar in an educational setting with instruction from recognized industry professionals who share their knowledge of the culture of Dominican tobacco.

The first course, lasting three days, began on 29 February with the visit of the Executive Director of the Tobacco Institute, Juan Francisco Caraballo, to sign with the President of La Aurora, Guillermo Leon, the document certifying the first agreement between a government agency and a private company.

After the signing, the first day of class began with Benjamín Menéndez – an emblematic figure in the tobacco industry in which he has worked for 62 years –speaking on the history of Tobacco through the centuries. Next, Juan Ventura, industrial engineer and director of operations at La Aurora, specializing in issues related to Tobacco’s development, described the economic and social importance of tobacco in the Dominican Republic.

The third hour of class began with the former President of General Cigar, Daniel Núñez, who, together with industrial engineer and consultant in Tobacco cultivation and processes Leoncio Cruz, discussed the cultural practices of seed beds, harvest and curing. After lunch, they both spoke for the rest of the day about the processes of fermentation and aging of raw tobacco –pre-processing– concluding with a visit by the whole group to a plantation to see in detail the destemming of the filler.
The second day began with a visit to La Aurora. After the instructional portion came the first hour of theory by collaborating professor José Seijas, an industrial engineer who has managed several tobacco companies throughout his career, notably having served as the president of the largest tobacco company in the world, employing 5,000 people. Seijas went into depth about the functionality and quality of cigars, a very interesting topic for the day’s audience.

After lunch and a short break to taste some cigars in the cigar lounge adjacent to the Cigar Institute classrooms, the afternoon session began with a class on cigar selection and the processes of pressing and rolling.

The third day was for many students a demonstration of the content they had learned, put into practice in a class by Master Blender Manuel Inoa. From the rolling of cigars to their banding and packing, the master blender covered all of this, capped off by observations from Guillermo León (President of La Aurora) regarding cigar selection, cutting and lighting. The course ended with an assessment test and delivery of official diplomas to all students.
